How to choose a power bank

Capacity (mAh). As a rough guide, a 5,000 mAh power bank gives most smartphones about one full charge, 10,000 mAh about two, and 20,000 mAh or more about three to four, or enough to top up a tablet. Real-world charges are lower than the number suggests because some energy is lost as heat.

Charging speed (watts). For fast phone charging, look for USB-C Power Delivery (PD) at 20W or more. To charge a laptop, you need a USB-C port rated 65W or higher, such as the Alogic Roam (100W), Alogic 20,000 mAh (130W) or Klipxtreme PowerCell 30,000 mAh (140W).

Special features:

  • Wireless charging: Qi and Qi2 power banks charge compatible phones without a cable.
  • Rugged and solar: HyperGear's IPX5 solar power banks with built-in flashlights are made for camping and emergency kits.
  • Car and wall combos: Alogic Qi car mounts include a 5,000 mAh power bank, and some Fuse and Scosche models double as wall or car chargers.
  • Built-in cables: compact models with attached Lightning or USB cables mean one less thing to pack.

Power bank FAQ

Can I bring a power bank on a plane in Canada?

Power banks must go in your carry-on, never in checked baggage. Batteries under 100 Wh (roughly 27,000 mAh at the standard 3.7V) are generally allowed. Larger batteries may need airline approval, so check with your airline before you fly.

What size power bank do I need?

For a day out with one phone, 5,000 to 10,000 mAh is plenty. For travel, multiple devices or tablets, choose 20,000 mAh. For laptops, choose 20,000 mAh or more with a 65W+ USB-C port.

Can a power bank charge a laptop?

Yes, if the laptop charges over USB-C and the power bank's USB-C port supplies enough wattage. Most laptops need 45W to 100W.
