How to choose an AUX cable or FM transmitter
1. Check your car stereo for a 3.5mm AUX input. If it has one, a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm AUX cable gives the cleanest sound with nothing to tune. A retractable cable, like the iEssentials 3.3 ft cable, keeps the cord tidy.
2. No AUX input? Use an FM transmitter. An FM transmitter plugs into your phone's headphone jack and broadcasts your audio to an empty FM station on your car radio. The Scosche transmitter offers 20 frequencies and runs on two AAA batteries. The Fuse transmitter uses a braided nylon 3.5mm cable.
3. Check your phone's port. Most new iPhones and many Android phones no longer have a 3.5mm headphone jack. You'll need a USB-C or Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, sold separately, to use any AUX cable or transmitter.
AUX cable FAQ
Why does my FM transmitter have static?
Another station is broadcasting near your chosen frequency. Tune both the transmitter and the radio to a frequency with no station, and retune when you drive into a new city.
Does cable length affect sound quality?
For short runs like a car or desk, no. Pick a length that reaches without stretching, so the plug doesn't get strained.
Can I use an AUX cable with a Bluetooth car stereo?
Yes. Many stereos have both, and AUX is handy when Bluetooth pairing won't connect or for a passenger's device.
